Following an assessment of the situation in the defense establishment this evening, the Coordinator of Government Operations in the Occupied Territories, Major General Rassan Aliyan, announced the opening of the Erez crossing for the crossing of workers from Gaza to Israel.
The crossing was closed on Sunday and Monday after last Saturday the defense establishment decided to close it following a rocket fire from Gaza, instead of a kinetic attack in the Gaza Strip.
The defense establishment hoped that the closure of the crossing would put pressure on Hamas to urge it to crack down on Islamic Jihad militants who have fired rockets at Israel in recent days.
Since the announcement of the closure of the crossing, so far no rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel.
The decision to reopen the Erez crossing will allow 12,000 Palestinian workers to move daily from Gaza to work in Israel.
