Late effects occur mainly after severe corona courses.

Other risk factors are the gender and weight of the patients, shows "one of the most important works on Long Covid".

London – A British study on the long-term effects of Corona brings new knowledge about the phenomenon from which many Germans also suffer.

Some things are not heard for the first time, but the study also brings new insights.

Long Covid: Over 70 percent of hospitalized corona cases show long-term consequences

The so-called post-hospitalization Covid-19 study from England shows that more than 70 percent of all hospitalized corona cases have not fully recovered even a year later, but are suffering from long-term consequences.

The study involved 2,320 people aged 18 and over who had been discharged from hospital with COVID-19 across the UK.

Long Covid is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “symptoms in people with a probable or confirmed corona infection, usually 3 months after the onset of infection with symptoms that lasts at least 2 months.

In some cases, a distinction is made between long-Covid symptoms (symptoms that occur a few weeks after infection) and post-Covid symptoms (all symptoms that occur 12 weeks or more after infection).

So far, there are no effective treatments for Long Covid, according to the study.

An improved understanding of the disease was intended to take a step forward in the direction of the development of therapeutic methods and medicines.

According to the study, the most common symptoms after a year include:

  • Fatigue (60 percent)

  • Muscle pain (54 percent)

  • Poor sleep (52 percent)

  • Shortness of breath (51 percent)

  • Joint pain and swelling (47 percent)

  • Slowed thinking (46 percent)

  • pain (46 percent)

  • Short-term memory loss (44 percent)

  • Limb weakness (41 percent)

A study by the University of Essen on Long Covid also recently identified fatigue as the most important symptom.

Some patients were still suffering from clinically relevant symptoms of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder after one year.

In addition, Corona often puts an enormous strain on the immune system as a whole, so that other diseases can occur more severely.

Based on its investigation, the study identified the following risk factors for long-lasting long-Covid: A severe course or, in particular, invasive mechanical ventilation during the Covid-19 disease is a risk factor.

In addition, it is also more likely to be affected who is female.

Being overweight is also a risk factor.

A consequence of Long Covid: increased levels of inflammation due to the concentration of certain proteins in the blood

An increased C-reactive protein concentration (CRP) was found in the blood serum of corona patients who had severe courses.

This is a protein produced in the liver in response to inflammation.

Therefore, increased inflammation levels were found - to varying degrees - in all long-Covid patients.

In addition to the increased levels of inflammation, the high susceptibility to autoimmune diseases is a problem: the study found that the participants had increased levels of the protein CD70, which is involved in the development of autoimmune diseases, among other things.

Also the inflammatory marker interleukin-6

was increased many times.

This points to possible neuroinflammation contributing to common cognitive impairment in post-Covid patients, the study said, as CD70 could be linked to inflammation in the central nervous system.

German experts emphasize the importance of the study

The intensive care physician and President of the German Society for Internal Intensive Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine (DGIIN), Christian Karagiannidis, described the study on Twitter as one of the "most important works on Long-Covid".

The elevated inflammatory markers could provide an important clue to possible therapeutic approaches, he says.

Health Minister Karl Lauterbach also considers the study and research on Long Covid to be important, as he announced on Twitter.

“The long-term effects of Covid will cost our healthcare system a lot of money for a long time to come.

Research for Long-Covid urgently needs to be expanded," he tweeted in response to the study.
