New York (CNN Business) --

Burger King is giving away free fries, but you have to meet one condition first.

The promotion is only available to members of Burger King's free digital loyalty program Royal Perks in the United States.

Starting Monday, customers can add any size fries (small, medium or large) to their purchase once a week at no additional cost.

The offer will be available for the rest of the year.

The promotion is aimed at expanding Burger King's loyalty program, which began operating seven months ago and which the company said in a press release is an "important goal" for Burger King, as it leaves behind the paper coupons.

Restaurant Brands International, the chain's parent company, said in an earlier earnings call that it is "pleased with the early results" from signups for the program.

Burger King gave its fledgling rewards program a boost by selling Whoppers for $0.37 to celebrate the burger's 64th anniversary.

It also gave members of the rewards program early access to its new “ghost” chili chicken nuggets in October 2021.

Ultimately, the goal of Burger King and other brands with loyalty programs is to increase sales and attract customers, ideally on a daily basis, by giving them reasons to choose them over their competitors.

The programs also give restaurant owners access to customer data and ordering habits, which helps deliver personalized offers to diners.

McDonald's, which launched its rewards program a few months before Burger King, quickly surpassed 20 million subscribers.

Wendy's credited its digital loyalty program for "strong sales" in its latest earnings call, and executives said they expect "significant growth" from the program this year.
