The closed beta of the character-based shooting game Overwatch 2 will launch today.

This is the new game and the most significant update that Overwatch players have been waiting for in recent years.

Along with all the trouble Blizzard has experienced, most of the development effort has been directed to the new game rather than seasonal updates to Overwatch which has remained stale and unremarkable for several years.

New game modes

Now, about six years after the release of the first game in the series, gamers around the world will be able to get their hands on the second game in the series.

The beta will provide in the familiar competitive game modes, where groups of players compete against each other in a variety of maps and game modes: Control Points, Push the Cart, Capture the flag and more.

It will also provide a new game mode called Push.

Updates to gameplay and characters, in addition to new content

The competitive position of the game changes to join the 5-on-5 standard as in most team competitive games today, compared to 6-on-6 in the first game.

In addition to the new character that will join the new game - Sojourn, some of the characters from the previous game like Orisa, Doomfist, Bastion, Sombra will undergo updates and adjustments to the new gameplay.

Overwatch 2 will also include updates to all familiar maps from the first game alongside four new maps: Circuit Royal, Midtown, Toronto, Rome.

The players spared no criticism

Following the game's initial announcement at the Blizzcon 209 event by game director Jeff Kaplan, there were voices claiming it was an inflated expansion pack marketed at full price and as another game in the series.

In classic competitive situations it will even be possible to play against players of the first Overwatch, who will also receive an update to characters and maps to allow this - which in practice makes Overwatch 2 a graphical update package only.

However, it is important to note that Overwatch 2 introduces PVE (Player vs. Environment) game modes for the first time and will include challenging and plot co-op stages that may be worth the price.

Blizzard has not yet provided full details that clarify the issue, but we will of course be updated with the end of the beta and the release of the full game
