The elected president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, apologized to his former colleagues at the World Bank who denounced him for harassment when he worked at that institution, in a video broadcast this Monday through Mary's Facebook account Munive, elected vice president of Costa Rica.

In his message, Chaves said that he “deeply regretted the actions that occurred more than 15 years ago and that affected former colleagues of mine at the World Bank, in such a way that they felt the need to file a harassment complaint against me.”

“I once again offer my sincerest apologies to those colleagues, without reservation.

I have reflected deeply, learned a lot and understood better.

What allows me today to act decisively as president”, assured the elected president of Costa Rica.

He also clarified that "the complaints were dismissed after due process in three very rigorous instances."

In August 2021, it came to light that Chaves was sanctioned for sexual misconduct against women who worked at the World Bank.

Chaves then argued that the complaints probably originated from "cultural differences and behaviors that would not be offensive to other people."

, Chaves was demoted, but not fired, despite an alleged documented pattern of harassment involving six women.

Chaves has said that the case has been tried, investigated and that it continues to be used against him.

The elected president of Costa Rica worked for more than 30 years at the World Bank.

In 2019, he closed his stint with the agency as director of the Indonesian office.

In the same message in which he apologizes, the president-elect announced the creation of a high-level commission to develop actions that promote respect and inclusion of women at all levels of society.

Chaves added that his first public policy commitment as president will be to do what he can to free women from all kinds of harassment.

"There will be zero tolerance," she assured, adding that she will also work "to pay the historic debt we owe our women in terms of employment and educational opportunities."

The president-elect of Costa Rica concluded that this commitment "begins the path of my government and closes a painful chapter in the lives of my former colleagues, my wife, my daughters, my sisters and my own."

Rodrigo Chaves will take office on May 8 for the 2022-2026 period, in a ceremony for the transfer of powers that will take place in the Legislative Assembly.
