The most obvious intention of this year's B 2 tunnel project is to be tackled next week: the construction of a 50-metre-long traffic island at the Gautinger Strasse/Uhdestrasse intersection.

Starnberg

– World politics does not even stop at the small district town of Starnberg.

Because during the G7 summit in Elmau at the end of June, the entire B 2 from Starnberg to the edge of the Alps must be free of construction sites.

The federal government ordered it that way because the federal highway is the detour route for the Garmisch Autobahn.

What does that have to do specifically with Starnberg?

The state building authority in Weilheim has to step on the gas with its construction work on the federal highway.

"From June 23rd to 28th there must be no traffic disruptions on the B 2," says Oliver Schneider, the senior construction manager of the tunnel project, in an interview with Starnberger Merkur.

Construction site planned from May 5th to June 3rd

Construction of the traffic island at the intersection of B 2/Gautinger Strasse/Uhdestrasse will begin as early as next week.

It will be around 50 meters long, up to 2.50 meters wide and green at the front and back.

There will be a traffic light on the island for pedestrians who should safely cross the main road at this point.

The current traffic light system will be dismantled for this purpose.

It is no longer necessary because in future drivers will only be able to turn right at this intersection from all four directions (or drive straight ahead on the B 2).

"The conversion pursues the fundamental goal of optimizing the flow of traffic the closer you get to the north portal," says a statement from the building authority.

The main access to the commercial area should be via Petersbrunner Strasse by then at the latest.

The construction site set-up is planned for the night from Thursday, May 5th to Friday, May 6th.

From this point on, only one lane will temporarily be available in the roadworks area heading into town.

Out of town it remains with two lanes.

It was considered at short notice to set up a changing lane - in the morning into town, in the afternoon out of town - says Schneider.

Even after consultation with the police and district office, this proved to be unfeasible.

According to the authority, the construction period is “probably four weeks until Friday, June 3rd”.

After that, but before the G7 summit, there are plans to finish the top layer in the area, says Schneider.

For this purpose, work should be carried out 24 hours a day over two weekends in order to keep the impairments as low as possible.

However, these cannot be avoided during the construction of the traffic island.

It is then not possible to turn left onto Gautinger Strasse and right onto Uhdestrasse from the direction of the city centre.

It is also not possible to turn onto Uhdestrasse from the direction of the Autobahn.

The detour will take place via Perchastraße.

Access to petrol stations and companies possible

However, access to the Esso petrol station, the beverage market and the fitness studio on Münchner Straße is possible.

From the petrol station, road users can also drive onto Uhdestraße and from there continue onto the B 2 in the direction of the motorway.

The existing pedestrian traffic light at the height of the Pharmatechnik company is in operation, the sidewalk in front of the Esso gas station can be used.

According to Schneider, the construction manager, the construction of the traffic island is the most obvious project that will be carried out this year as part of the tunnel project in Starnberg.

The necessary but rather inconspicuous relocations of divisions have so far been successful, he emphasizes.

Most recently, the city council had considered postponing the construction of the traffic island to later years.

However, the building authority put a stop to them.

"If the city had got in touch in the middle of last year, it wouldn't have been a problem," Schneider says now.

Since then, however, the work has progressed further.

At the intersection with Gautinger Strasse, the traffic lights have already been reduced to such an extent that there is currently only a temporary solution - which will disappear this year and be replaced by the new traffic light.
