The new crown epidemic has raged for more than two years, and the graduation of tourism-related students means unemployment.

A girl was successfully hired by an airport ground handling equipment company through the AA's working holiday program. She resolutely left the protection of her family and moved from the "inland" Yuen Long to the "seaside" Tung Chung.

A participant who claimed to be the "little princess" in her family said that she was not familiar with household chores at first, but after a year of self-reliance, she has transformed from a girl to an adult. In addition to learning how to price in the market, she is also working full-time for the first time in her life. Learn different skills on the job.

She thanked her family for their hard work, saying, "I couldn't imagine how hard it was for Mommy before. If I didn't move out, I might not be able to do it." She also said that after this working holiday, she would consider working in the transportation industry in the future.

Last year, the "Working Holiday@Lantau Island" programme arranged backpacking tours in Tai O and Er O for participants.

Tourism student turns unemployed to airport job after graduation

Yang Minyan, 24, is the fourth AA working holiday participant. She completed the Metropolitan University's "Tourism and Hospitality Service" course in 2020. Unfortunately, the outbreak of the epidemic has hit the tourism industry and it is difficult to find a job. I learned about the plan by chance, so I came up with the idea of "living away from home". At the same time, I felt that the airport work was related to tourism, and I thought it could kill two birds with one stone.

After five rounds of interviews, she was hired as a full-time employee by Dachang, a ground handling equipment service company.

The plan provides her with one year of free accommodation in a private housing estate in Tung Chung with three participants of similar age.

Yang Minyan said that before work, her knowledge of the airport was only the passenger terminal, but after finishing her working holiday, in her mind, "the airport is a good place to feel." Because of her work relationship, she has to drive different types of vehicles to enter and exit the restricted area (they have already passed the test before graduation. In addition to being able to easily identify different types of vehicles such as stair cars, electric cars and energy cars in the airport, they have also learned the ability to deal with problems independently.

She believes that the relevant working holiday scheme can help graduates choose their future paths and is considering a future career in the transport industry.

Thanks to the family for their efforts: I never imagined how hard Mommy had to work

She had never tried to live alone before joining the project. After a year of independent living, she has learned about the different market prices. She even talked about the prices of the four markets in Tung Chung during an interview with CUHK.

She describes herself as a "little princess" at home. Her family is responsible for household chores such as buying groceries, household cleaning, laundry, and paying utility bills.

She said, "I didn't do shopping before Working Holiday, but now I can tell you what I can get for the price."

She has no family to protect her after leaving home. In addition to learning life skills, her cooking skills have also improved by leaps and bounds.

She thanked her family for their hard work: "I never imagined how hard it was for Mommy before. If she didn't move out, she might not be able to do it herself."
