Originally, Andechs' mayor Georg Scheitz wanted to wait until the investigations into monument protection were completed before releasing the information.

"But I was constantly asked about it in town," says Scheitz in an interview with Starnberger Merkur.

That's why he announced the news during the citizens' meeting on Monday evening in the monastery inn, to which around 120 locals had come: Graves more than 2000 years old were found on the construction site for the new fire station in Frieding.

- "It's really an incredibly interesting story," said Scheitz.

"I was totally surprised when I found out that something had actually been found on the property." However, Scheitz knew that there was a possibility of finding legacies from another time in the municipality of Andechs.

"According to the development plan, the erection of the new fire station south of Scheuertalstraße must be accompanied by a monument protection law.

Archaeological monuments are probably suspected here.”

Five to ten centimeters of humus had to be removed from the ground.

Then the employees of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection found three graves in the period from March 17th to 25th.

"In addition to a 500 to 800 year old Celtic sword, there were also shards and bracelets in the ground," explained Scheitz.

The precise investigations are still ongoing, which is why the preservationists do not want to publish any further information on request for the time being.

It is not yet clear what will happen next with the find.

Scheitz hopes they will go to the community.

"That would be a great thing."

Since the excavations took place in a part of the property that is later planned for the parking lot, the work on the hall for the Friedingen fire brigade was not affected in the slightest.

"We were able to start building the hall at the same time as the excavations, which until recently was still in storage." So far only the pillars are there, but the building should be ready in six weeks.

"The interior work will then continue in September." A large warehouse, two changing rooms, a small warehouse, a utility room and the fire station with two parking spaces are planned in the 500 square meter main building.
