Göttingen's swimming pools: women are now allowed to dive topless

A person is thrown out of the pool for baring their breasts.

Now Göttingen has decided that women are allowed to swim shirtless at the weekend.

Göttingen – Starting next Sunday (May 1st, 2022), women will always be allowed to dive shirtless into Göttingen’s swimming pool on weekends.

The city's sports committee has now decided that, as reported by hna.de.

The topic became the focus of Göttingen politics as early as August 2021. As the taz reported, a 30-year-old person who does not identify himself as a woman took off his top in the brine pool.

Since her breasts were no longer covered, the lifeguards issued a reference to the swimming pool.

According to the taz, the swimming pool manager initially defended the actions of his staff.

After some time, however, he signaled that he was open to possible changes in the bathing regulations, according to another article in the newspaper.

In Göttingen's Grone natural adventure pool, women are also allowed to swim topless at the weekend.

The new regulation applies at least until the end of August.

"The same breasts for everyone": the alliance demands the right to free women's upper bodies

After being thrown out of the outdoor pool, the person concerned is said to have also become involved in an alliance that campaigns nationwide for women's exposed breasts.

In a petition with 2,500 signatures so far, the group "Same Breasts for All" calls for an explicit regulation for public space "that all people, regardless of gender, are allowed to move bare-chested equally without restrictions."

The requirement also states: "A bare chest in itself does not cause any public nuisance and does not constitute a nuisance to the general public." The city of Munich has already created an exemplary regulation for bathing areas.

At least the city of Göttingen has now followed suit following intensive political and social discussions in the city.

Under a cumbersome title, the municipal sports committee agreed on the “recommendation of an option for using the Eiswiese bathing paradise for non-binary and female-reading people”.

Initially, however, only during a test phase until August 31st, which applies to all municipal swimming pools.

The "Göttinger Tageblatt" reported on this first.
