The Government is studying the land use options for Area 137 in Tseung Kwan O. A member of the Legislative Council has raised a written question to the Transport and Housing Bureau, asking whether the authority has plans to further develop the Tseung Kwan O Line and conduct a feasibility study, including extending the line to Area 137, Tseung Kwan O.

The Secretary for Transport and Housing, Chen Fan, replied in writing that he would explore the further development of the Tseung Kwan O Line in accordance with the results of the land use study in the area.

Tseung Kwan O Area 137 is located to the south of Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate. Previously, the Government had designated this area as a piece of urban land with potential for large-scale development. In December 2016, the Planning Department commissioned a consultant to carry out a planning and engineering study involving a land area of about 80 hectares.

The purpose of the study is to examine the development potential and constraints of Area 137, and to explore the feasibility of using the area for residential, commercial and other developments in the long term.

Legislative Councilor Lam So-wai raised a written question, pointing out that the population of Tseung Kwan O District has increased rapidly in recent years, and the trains are becoming more and more crowded when citizens take the MTR.

She is also concerned about the further development of the Tseung Kwan O Line, including whether it will be extended to Area 137 in Tseung Kwan O.

Chen Fan: Exploring the further development of the Tseung Kwan O Line with the results of the land use study

Chen Fan replied that the Civil Engineering and Development Department and the Planning Department are conducting a study on the land use options for Area 137, and the bureau will discuss the further development of the Tseung Kwan O Line in accordance with the results of the above study.

He also said that in order to cope with the change in the passenger volume of the Tseung Kwan O Line, the MTR has strengthened the train services between Tiu Keng Leng and LOHAS stations during non-peak hours in August last year.

Before the fifth wave of the epidemic, during most of the non-busy hours between the two stations, the train frequency was increased from 12 minutes to 8.2 to 10 minutes.

As for weekday peak hours, the frequency between Cannes Station and North Point Station is 6.7 minutes.

The planning of the North Island Line and East Kowloon Line is slow, and Chen Fan points out that both involve technical difficulties

Chen Fan also revealed that the planning of the North Hong Kong Island Line and the East Kowloon Line involves complicated technical matters, and the alignment of the line needs to be coordinated with the planning of the new waterfront area on the north shore of Hong Kong Island. As well as existing railway tunnels, the available site area is limited and the construction difficulty is increased, pointing out that various technical challenges require detailed studies to develop suitable solutions.

As for the East Kowloon Line, he said that due to the undulating terrain along the railway line and limited by the climbing ability of heavy-duty railways, some sections of the road have to go deep underground. It is expected that the project will have considerable technical difficulties, mainly due to overcoming the mountains. technical problem.

He went on to point out that, regarding the above-mentioned two projects, the MTR is conducting further studies on feasible options in response to the government's comments to improve the design of the projects.

The government will announce the future direction of the project in due course when the details of the proposed railway scheme, such as alignment, station location, and implementation timetable, are complete.
