The Registrar of Medical Practitioners, the Director of Health, today (27th) announced the first batch of medical qualifications recognised by the Special Registration Committee.

Including 27 famous university medical courses in Australia, Canada, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States, all taught in English, of which the United States accounts for up to 15, including Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, which is famous for its medical science, and Oxford in the United Kingdom. And the University of Cambridge is also on the list.


The first list of recognized medical qualifications will be gazetted this Friday (29th), which will take effect on the same day, and will be submitted to the Legislative Council on May 4th for a pre-construction-then-deliberation process.

The list of the first batch of accredited medical qualifications announced today includes 27 universities, including 2 in Australia, 3 in Canada, 1 in Singapore, 6 in the United Kingdom and 15 in the United States. Except for 5 universities in the United Kingdom, which have 6-year medical courses, the rest are 4 or 5-year programs, all taught in English, are internationally renowned universities, such as the National University of Singapore, the University of Melbourne in Australia, the University of Toronto in Canada, Boston and Stanford University in the United States, etc.

Government: Complete list of recognised medical qualifications within this year

After the completion of the amendments in November last year, the Government set up a special registration committee under the Medical Council to review non-local medical courses of similar quality to the medical courses of the two universities in Hong Kong, so as to draw up a list of recognized medical qualifications. .

The Secretary for Food and Health, Sophia Chan, said that the committee has achieved preliminary results in drawing up the list of recognized medical qualifications, and he is confident that the committee will complete the work of drawing up the list of recognized medical qualifications within this year.

Chen Zhaoshi said that there is currently a shortage of doctors in the public medical system, and the announcement of the first batch of approved medical qualifications list just allows qualified non-locally trained doctors to come to Hong Kong through the special registration route as soon as possible to serve in public medical institutions.

Students who intend to study medicine outside Hong Kong can also refer to the relevant list for further study options.

Since the publication of the Medical Registration (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 in the Gazette on October 29 last year, non-locally trained doctors with recognized medical qualifications can apply for a special registration route to come to Hong Kong to work as doctors in public medical institutions if they meet the relevant conditions. , and will be formally registered to practice medicine in Hong Kong after serving a certain period of time, obtaining a recognized specialist qualification and passing the assessment.

As for non-locally trained medical graduates who hold recognized medical qualifications but have not yet practiced outside Hong Kong, if they meet the relevant requirements, they can also take the Licensing Examination of the Medical Council of Hong Kong (Medical Council) to apply for the special registration route in the public sector in Hong Kong. Practicing in a medical institution can also be formally registered after meeting the conditions applicable to all specially registered doctors.
