Millions of shekels worth of gold smuggled:

Police and customs workers arrested three East Jerusalem residents Muhammad Najib (26), Wahid Bakri (26) and Adali Najib (28) at Ben Gurion Airport last night (Tuesday and Wednesday) on suspicion of trying to smuggle The suspects were taken for further investigation at the Jerusalem Customs and VAT Investigations Office and were brought before a Jerusalem Magistrate's Court judge this morning, who extended their detention by three days.

The three passed the green route of the landers at Ben Gurion Airport on the way down from the flight from Dubai and inside two dedicated seat belts which two of the three passengers carried on their 1,000 gold coins seized with a total weight of more than 8 kg, with a market value of two million shekels.

According to the tax authority, the coins seized tonight are of the English sovereign type.

These are 22-carat gold coins bearing the portrait of English kings on the one hand and the portrait of St. George on horseback on the other, which were minted by the English Crown and are considered the most sought after among coin traders and collectors.

The value of each currency is estimated at NIS 2,000. 

About a month ago, another young man from East Jerusalem, Raed Shviki, was arrested upon his return from Dubai, with 4.75 kg of gold ounces worth about NIS 1 million, hidden in a belt similar to those now seized. The young man arrested about a month ago belongs to the same smuggling network. .
