"Birkin bangs": the vintage and tapered fringe that will be on all fronts this summer

2022-04-28T15:16:56.280Z

An expert gives us her advice for adopting these bangs inspired by the iconic hair look of Jane Birkin in the 1970s.

Jane Birkin's signature hairstyle from the

seventies

era continues to influence current beauty trends.

“In 2022, we are still inspired by her emblematic bangs, a hair reference for many women”, confirms hairdresser Delphine Courteille, founder of her eponymous salon in Paris.

On social networks, celebrities and influencers are wearing it at will this spring: from singer Angèle to make-up artist Violette, model Louise Follain and influencer Mara Lafontan.

“Many clients ask to have the same bangs as Jeanne Damas (creator of the fashion and cosmetics brand Rouje, editor’s note) whom I have been styling for several years and who herself was inspired by Jane Birkin”, observes the expert.

XXL length and asymmetry games

Unlike the ultra-short “baby bangs” recently brought up to date by Zoë Kravitz or the “bottleneck bangs” curtain wick seen on Dakota Johnson, the Birkin fringe is more casual.

Due to its asymmetrical length extended to the eyes and blunt at the tip, but also due to its wispy texture which gives a slightly messy effect.

“It's a wispy, fuzzy fringe that's pretty light and easy going.

It is short in the middle between the two eyebrows and longer on the sides”, describes Delphine Courteille.

An

effortless

look that the most Parisian of Londoners maintained herself at home: “I had the chance to work with Jane Birkin for Hermès and we talked a lot about her hair and makeup.

She said to me: "You know, I just put a little lipstick on my mouth and on my cheeks, and I cut my own bangs", says Delphine Courteille, "She did a lot of things - same side hairstyle, makeup and styling.

This "homemade" side comes back enormously today, this falsely Parisian hairstyle too.

The Birkin fringe, step by step

During confinement, Delphine Courteille therefore encouraged her subscribers on Instagram to carve out the “

Birkin bangs

” yourself.

“It's quite easy and fun to do.

Just take a small nail clipper,” she recommends, “wedge the wick between your index and middle fingers.

Then, starting in the middle of the face, practice the staking method: that is, cut the ends of the bangs by positioning the scissors vertically, in the hair.

Then go down the sides gradually, so as to have larger locks on the sides.

Styling-wise, the routine feels just as basic, like she's left it air-dried and brushed through with her fingers.

“The ideal is not to work it too much.

It's a rather natural fringe, there's not much to do", assures Delphine Courteille, "If your lock is a little too soft, just use a brush and a hair dryer to smooth it slightly. .”

The only requirement?

“It has to be clean.

If you have oily skin, the bangs will get greasy from excess oil on the forehead.

I advise you to wash it every morning with a glove, a little water and shampoo.

With the temperatures rising, slip small mattifying papers in your handbag in case of perspiration under the wick.

If you don't have time to clean it, dry shampoo is a good alternative,” continues the hairdresser.

A flattering fit

Finally, the “Birkin bangs” has another advantage: that of flattering all profiles.

“It's a style that I recommend for those who are afraid of doing bangs for the first time.

Very straight bangs or curtain bangs are more complicated to wear,” says Delphine Courteille, adding that “this look suits all faces.

It's even better on a square cut above the shoulders or on long 70's style hair.

On the other hand, "it doesn't really work on fluffy or curly hair", according to the specialist.

As for maintenance, touch-ups every six to eight weeks are enough, in the salon or in the bathroom for the more adventurous.
