In 1994, a ship belonging to the Federal Border Police at the time recovered a dead man from the sea off Heligoland.

Authorities still don't know who he is.

Wilhelmshaven – He was weighed down with cast iron shoe lasts and wore a tie.

In 1994, a ship belonging to the then Federal Border Police See (today the Federal Police See) recovered an unknown dead person west of Helgoland.

28 years later, his identity in this "cold case" is still unclear - and the investigators are once again turning to the public.

The Wilhelmshaven Police Inspectorate and the Oldenburg Public Prosecutor announced on Wednesday that they were looking for information about the shoe lasts or the tie.

The shoe lasts were probably used for repair work on women's shoes, they date from the 1920s or 1930s.

The police have so far received more than 50 tips, it said.

These mostly related to the tie.

In further forensic investigations after the exhumation in December 2021, a complete DNA profile was reportedly isolated.

This enables a comparison with corresponding data from national and international databases.
