Explosion in talks: Israel refuses Jordanian demand on Temple Mount issue Israel today

2022-04-28T17:05:04.506Z

Israel has refused to approve a series of appointments Amman has requested to the Waqf mechanism trusting what is happening on the Temple Mount • Jordan understands that in order to reach an understanding with Jerusalem they must involve the United States

The tension around the Temple Mount rises today (Thursday) stage with the prayers of the last Friday of the month of Ramadan.

Jordanian King Abdullah went to working meetings in the United States today, after last night he hosted a reception for Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas at his palace.

At the center of the talks is the situation in the al-Aqsa Mosque.

In view of the tensions in relations with Israel over the recent events on the Temple Mount, Amman understands that in order to get out of the tangle and prevent a worsening of the situation, they must also involve the Americans.

Al-Aqsa events gave the Jordanians a wake-up call and showed them that their control of the Temple Mount is fragile.

Jordan's influence on the mountain has gradually waned in the last two years, and the concern in the royal house is that the trend will continue.

It is not for nothing that the King is now making efforts to prevent further erosion in the special status of the kingdom as the guardian of the holy places in Jerusalem.

Against this background, it is important for the Jordanians to strengthen the status of the Waqf members on the mountain.

A Palestinian source told Israel Today that Jordan had recently appointed dozens of new Waqf guards, but that Israel had so far refused to admit them to al-Aqsa.

The Jordanians will try to explain to the Americans that in order to bring calm to the mountain, one must adhere to the understandings from 2014 led by John Kerry, then agreed upon principles that Alaxa is for Muslim prayer only, while members of other religions can visit it but not hold prayers.

"The Jordanians are trying to convey to the Americans that Israel has violated these understandings, and that is what led to the recent riots in Alaxa," the source said.

The source added that both Jordan and the Palestinian Authority are coordinating with the Americans to reduce tensions, and that there are contacts between all parties in this matter.
