Landsberg – A restaurant that is open all year round is to be built at the Inselbad, on top of a new infrastructure building for the bath.

This is the current plan, which has now been presented to the city council.

According to this, gastronomy and pool operations should have separate entrances and be completely independent of each other, precisely because of the physical proximity.

"Light on heavy" was the motto when planning the building, explained architect Hagen Pohl.

A look at the visualization of the drafts makes it clear what he means.

Bright and airy, the gastronomy section sits enthroned on top of the swimming pool building.

It consists of three areas: a part for the kitchen and technical infrastructure, a dining room that is glazed on three sides and a terrace in front.

The restaurant can seat just under 200 guests.

The existing swimming pool building will be demolished, only the basement will remain.

Thanks to a "second skin" (Pohl) - a movable additional building shell - the restaurant and terrace can be optically closed to enable events and private celebrations in addition to the swimming pool operation.

On the one hand, the revelers would not be disturbed and, on the other hand, they would not be sitting on the platter themselves, explained Matthias Loebermann, who oversees the planning as chairman of the design advisory board.

Pohl and Loebermann reported at a press conference in the run-up to the city council meeting that there had been long discussions about how to successfully establish the initially difficult to reconcile uses of gastronomy and bathing.

The architecture tries to deal with this conflict.

The gastronomy should neither be a fast food restaurant nor a five-star restaurant, nor should it be a “private little place”, but “a semi-public meeting place for all Landsbergers,” said Loebermann in the city council.

A central aspect is the proximity to the new square that is being created at the Lechsteg landing point and is to be upgraded in line with the expected heavy traffic.

The restaurant also benefits from the visual relationships to the Lechwehr, Lech and Mutterturm.

According to Loebermann, it should radiate “a certain noblesse” simply because of its prominent location.

There should not be direct access from the swimming pool to the restaurant, nor to the terrace.

Petra Kohler-Ettner (CSU) warned that this would not go down well with the Landsbergers.

However, scantily clad bathers going from the sunbathing area to the restaurant should be avoided.

A separate kiosk is planned for tasting in the bathroom.

More green, less grey

The planning of the pool landscape was also revised.

It is now based much more closely on the previous character of the bathroom than in the first draft.

A separate small children's area will be created a little further away.

Overall, the new design contains more greenery and less concrete.

"The pool landscape looks round," praised Christian Hettmer (CSU).

However, he again criticized the planned gastronomy due to "astronomical costs" and doubted the profitability of the restaurant.

A lease of the necessary amount will not be achievable and the city will ultimately have to "subsidize" the gastronomy.

Third Mayor Felix Bredschneijder (SPD) then accused Hettmer of “polemic and unworthy argumentation”.

According to experts, the gastronomy will work, leases of the necessary magnitude are already being paid elsewhere in the city.

"Predicting bankruptcy is a denial of reality."

As far as the construction costs of the renovation are concerned, the planner Hagen Pohl assumes an estimated 18 million euros net - albeit without including the current imponderables.

Loebermann warned that delays would only lead to additional costs.

"The city has to state in principle whether it wants dual use or not."

She wants - finally the unanimous decision was made to commission the service phase 3 of the planning including cost calculation.
