Does Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) cut a good figure given the challenges of the time?

When it comes to the opinion of many citizens in Germany, the verdict is devastating.

In an interview with the YouGov opinion research institute, 45 percent of those asked said they were rather dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the young chancellor's actions in the conflict surrounding the war in Ukraine.

Among SPD sympathizers, however, the picture looked a little different: 59 percent were satisfied with Scholz and 34 percent dissatisfied.

While Vladimir Putin continues to order attacks on Ukraine and Germany has debated arms deliveries for a long time, many survey participants disagreed with Scholz's leadership.

Only 25 percent attested to his leadership in dealing with the Russian aggression - 51 percent said: "He acts rather weak in leadership." The coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP cuts off even slightly worse than the chancellor overall.

However, the survey data should be taken with a pinch of salt: it was collected before the federal government agreed to supply heavy weapons, and at least in part before the announcement of deliveries of Gepard tanks.

While the trade dispute over Russian gas supplies between Vladimir Putin, who may be suffering from Parkinson's disease, and the West in the Ukraine war continues to escalate, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyj, has sharply criticized the gas supply freeze to Poland and Bulgaria.

This week, the Russian leadership began a new series of energy blackmails against the Europeans, the president said in a video message on Wednesday evening.

"Russia considers not only gas, but also any other trade as a weapon."

At the same time, Zelenskyy praised the EU Commission's plan to temporarily exempt exports from Ukraine to the EU from import duties.

At a time when Russia is trying to "provoke a global price crisis", Ukrainian exports could help stabilize the markets.

“So it's not just for us, but for all Europeans.

The inhabitants of all countries that could be affected by Russia's destructive ambitions.” Meanwhile, it seems as if the Ukraine war could spill over to other regions: There were several attacks in Transnistria, the origin of which is unclear.
