During demonstrations by Palestinian groups against Israel's policies a week ago, there were anti-Semitic calls and stones and firecrackers thrown at police officers.

With a ban on another rally, the police want to avoid a repeat.

Berlin - The organizers of a pro-Palestinian demonstration announced for Friday are complaining about the ban on the police.

The administrative court in Berlin has a corresponding urgent application, said a court spokeswoman for the German Press Agency.

The court will decide later today.

Palestinian initiatives had registered a “protest demonstration against the Israeli aggression in Jerusalem” for the afternoon in Kreuzberg.

However, the police banned them for fear of renewed anti-Semitic incidents.

The police were also unable to say whether a few hundred Palestinians would gather in Kreuzberg or Neukölln on Friday afternoon despite the ban.

However, 600 to 700 police officers are on duty, it said.

Last Friday and Saturday there were anti-Semitic calls, stones and cannons thrown at police officers at similar demos against Israel's policies with several hundred participants.

According to the police, only 160 police officers were on site at the time.

The German-Israeli Society reacted with relief to the ban that had now been pronounced.

"This is a step in the direction that we demanded in an open letter from Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser because of the serious incidents at similar demonstrations last weekend," the company said.

The organization complained about "growing Israel-related anti-Semitism in the Arab-Palestinian milieu".

It is good that the Berlin police are reacting consistently and preventively, according to the support group for the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

The ban deprives openly expressed anti-Semitism of the place it all too often occupies.

The police are expecting further rallies and demonstrations until May 15th.

Then is the so-called Nakba Day (Arabic: "misfortune"), the day the Palestinians commemorate the expulsion of people from Palestine.

The authority announced that it would also use interpreters to have Arabic slogans translated and to check whether they were inflammatory.

This is also planned for May 1st, when in the evening a block of migrants, primarily of Turkish and Arabic origin, wants to take part in the traditional May Day demonstration as “Migrantifa”.

Last year, on May 1, anti-Semitic incidents were observed in this demonstration block of young migrants.

The organization "Palestine Speaks" called for participation in the traditional evening demonstration of left-wing and radical left-wing groups on May 1st.

"Intifada is our class struggle," it said on Twitter.

"As part of the internationalist bloc in Berlin, we are taking to the streets to demonstrate for the end of Israeli settlement colonialism, apartheid and for freedom, security and human rights for Palestinians."

After incidents a week ago, the police want to check more closely in future whether journalists have to leave events on the basis of the new demonstration law.

The Palestinian demonstration had expelled a Jewish journalist for allegedly disturbing the gathering and let the police enforce it.

The new law that the SPD, Left and Greens passed in 2021 makes this possible.

According to their own statements, the police want to check carefully in the future whether there really is a fault and only then take action.

A year ago, in May 2021, there were anti-Semitic incidents and violent outbreaks of violence in Berlin and other German cities during Palestinian demonstrations against Israel's actions in the Gaza conflict.

In Neukölln, anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli chants such as "Child murderer Israel", "Woman murderer Israel" and "Free Palestine" were also chanted.

Even then, experts called for strategies to combat the widespread anti-Semitism in groups of Arab origin.
