(CNN Spanish) --

Ecuadorians will no longer be required to wear a mask in closed and open spaces throughout the national territory and its use will be optional for citizens, President Guillermo Lasso announced during a special event this Thursday in Quito.

"This April 28, 2022 is a very special day because another important phase of this long fight against the virus that paralyzed the world for more than two years with very serious social and especially economic repercussions ends," said Lasso.

The president said that this moment comes thanks to the Vaccination Plan deployed in the country at a cost of US$ 1,000 million and the support of the international community.

He thanked China for providing nearly 52% of vaccines (between sold and donated) and the United States, Spain, Canada, Argentina, Germany, Mexico and Chile for their donations.

“It is a clear sign that we have practically defeated covid-19 (…) As of today in Ecuador, the use of the mask in open and closed spaces throughout the national territory will no longer be mandatory,” said the president.

The Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, reported that the pandemic "is under control" in Ecuador and that the country is experiencing a moment of "epidemiological transition."

Garzón said that the curve of infections by covid-19 has decreased substantially thanks to the vaccination plan promoted by the Ministry of Health.

According to the minister, 87% of the population is vaccinated with two doses and more than 30% have received a booster dose.

According to the report of the Ministry of Health, released by its minister, in the last week 1,073 people confirmed with covid-19 have been reported, which according to Garzón is a “huge difference” with the 52,000 infections registered at the beginning of the year.

He added that 85 people across the country are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 and 28 are in critical care units.

Garzón ended his presentation by insisting that "the pandemic is not over."

The president of the Emergency Operations Committee -COE-, Juan Zapata, who delivered to President Lasso the resolution on the elimination of the use of the mask in Ecuador, said that this Thursday is a "historic day" and that the new resolution on the The pandemic situation in the country eliminates more than 200 restrictive measures that were taken for more than two years.

"Ecuador is beginning to return to normal," Zapata said.

The Emergency Operations Committee in its resolution establishes exceptions for patients and medical personnel who go to health centers, medical institutions and hospitals, and for people who present respiratory symptoms.

In addition, it recommends its use for schools, colleges, public and air transport, and work spaces.
