They detect the first case of bird flu in humans in the United States: it is a Colorado prisoner who worked on a farm

A highly contagious outbreak of avian flu, which has killed hundreds of birds and now spans more than two dozen states, has been detected in a human for the first time in the United States, health authorities reported Thursday.

The man worked on a Colorado poultry farm and was involved in the slaughter of poultry suspected of being infected, which directly exposed him to the H5N1 flu, the state Department of Health said in a statement.

The man, who has only been reported to be under 40, has symptoms of fatigue and was being medicated with the antiviral drug Tamiflu, according to the state department.

The case, detected within the control carried out this week by local authorities to people exposed to poultry and wild birds, was confirmed on Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, in English).

The state Department of Health described the man as an inmate who was working on a Montrose County farm in a pre-release employment program.

The affected birds were euthanized, the department specified.

The state health agency and the CDC said Thursday that the risk to people from the virus remains low.

Although health authorities are concerned that the mutation could pose a threat to humans,

a UK poultry farmer tested positive for the virus in December.

The person was asymptomatic, according to the CDC.

Earlier versions of the virus infected about 880 people as of 2003, according to the agency.

According to the CDC, its fatality rate is 60%.

The H5N1 virus now circulating has been found in poultry in 29 states and in wild birds in 34 states, the CDC said.
