A few days ago the vegan break, the “Tölzer Veg”, began.
In four weeks, the participants can get to know sustainable and nature-conscious nutrition.
One person who is trying it out is the deputy mayor of Tölz, Michael Lindmair.
Mr. Lindmair, Tuesday was your birthday. What does a vegan birthday party look like?
Michael Lindmair:
There was a homemade vegan apple pie - but that's actually a completely normal apple pie recipe.
(laughs)
Why did you decide to take part in the time-out?
Michael Lindmair:
On the one hand it was curiosity, because we as a city have been offering this for several years.
So I want to try it myself.
I certainly won't ever eat meat again.
But I like the idea of taking a break.
Of course, the health aspect is also at the forefront.
I also think that we will have to change our diet anyway in the next few decades.
The constant availability of animal products causes problems.
I think it's important to create awareness that meat is worth something.
Do you take the break alone?
Michael Lindmair:
My partner is also involved.
So I'm not alone.
That's also the nice thing about the program, that you're accompanied all the way around.
I had an initial check-up to see if it was medically okay to take the break.
In four weeks I will be examined again to see what has changed.
I am supported by metabolism coach Marie Hörmann.
As part of the "Tölzer Veg" there is also a rich program from cooking courses to yoga, from sustainability lectures to excursions with the Isarrangers.
You also have the opportunity to meet people who are also participating.
And some Tölz restaurants also have vegan dishes on the menu during this time.
Does that mean you'll try your hand at yoga too?
Michael Lindmair:
Yes, that's also on the agenda.
If so, then I want to do it well.
(laughs)
What was your menu like on the first day?
Michael Lindmair:
For example, there was asparagus with potatoes and a vegan hollandaise sauce.
That was a nice start.
Also the birthday cake is really good.
The nice thing is that you don't have to do without enjoyment.
I would definitely like to try to do without substitute products.
How have you been doing with vegan dishes so far?
Michael Lindmair:
It's not entirely new to me, I haven't had meat every day either.
I didn't consciously eat vegan, but more often vegetarian.
Since the health aspect is important to me, I will definitely not only eat consciously for the next four weeks, but will definitely take something with me from it.
