China today announced the tightening of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, with the start of the five-day May Day holiday.
"The virus detection tests will be intensified with the start of the holiday, which is one of the most frequent periods of travel," Chinese officials told AFP, explaining that people are likely to stay home due to the worst return of the virus since the beginnings of its spread.
According to officials, Beijing will expand the scope of the closure to include public places after the holiday, and as of May 5, citizens will have to show a negative (Covid) examination result conducted during the past week to enter all public places and ride public transportation.
For activities such as sporting events and travel groups, participants will need to present a (negative) Covid test conducted within 48 hours, along with a certificate of full vaccination according to the new rules.
The atmosphere in the current holiday is clouded by an increase in the number of injuries in the capital, Beijing, while China recorded more than 10,700 local cases of Covid 19 today, including asymptomatic cases, the majority of which are in Shanghai, the economic center of the country.
