Chinese President Xi Jinping this weekend ordered Hunan Province authorities to act "at all costs" to rescue the missing following the collapse of an eight-story building in the southern city of Changsha
Chinese emergency crews have been working around the clock since Friday following the collapse for two days in a row.
As of Saturday afternoon (Israel time), five people had been rescued safely out of about 23 who were trapped. It is also unclear what happened to about 40 others who were nearby and have not yet been contacted.
At a press conference convened it was reported that the five rescued are in stable condition at the hospital.
Preliminary investigation reveals that the building - which included a complex of restaurant, cafe, motel, and residential apartments - underwent structural changes apparently without approval but it is unclear if these were the cause of its collapse, which was mainly in its rear.
