Up to more than 30 cm… This is what it has rained over the past 24 hours in certain municipalities in Guadeloupe, according to reports from Météo France.

In Abymes, in the center of the island, 311 mm of rain were recorded over this period.

Very high levels which led to the island being placed on red alert for a time, while “isolated precipitation may however continue to affect Guadeloupe, in particular areas already heavily affected and flooded”.

The images posted on social networks bear witness to the violence of the rains.

Roads under several tens of centimeters of water were filmed in several places in the department.

No less than 35 interventions have been identified in the municipalities of Gosier, Abymes, Pointe-à-Pitre and Baie-Mahault, notes Guadeloupe Première on its website.

Firefighters report 12 people rescued, who were in or on their vehicles.

A 50-year-old man was found dead in his car, explain the firefighters to Guadeloupe Première, without however making any apparent link with the floods.

As many photos show, residents were forced to abandon their vehicles in the face of rising waters.

The Bas-du-Fort shopping center was flooded, the channel also reports.

#Guadeloupe was affected by torrential rains.

In 24 hours, @MeteoFrance_AG reports 312.4mm at Raizet (Pointe-à-Pitre Airport) which exceeds the totals of May 7, 2012 (237.9 mm).

Vigilance, red at night, downgraded in the early morning to orange vigilance, remains relevant.

“Isolated thunderstorms are still possible.

As the hours go by, the risk of thunderstorms decreases, as does that of experiencing heavy showers again, writes Météo France in its bulletin.

An improvement should take shape around the afternoon at the latest.

In the meantime, it is recommended to be vigilant, especially when traveling.
