Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will pardon or commute the prison sentences of 1,542 prisoners on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting for Muslims, according to a statement released on Saturday.

On the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution has agreed to pardon or commute the sentences of 1,542 prisoners sentenced
" by Iranian courts, the statement said on his official website, without specifying who was eligible for this decision.
The Eid al-Fitr holiday begins Monday in Iran.
