A deadly attack on a security guard at an Israeli West Bank settlement and the killing of a young Palestinian man by Israeli soldiers have further heightened tensions in the Middle East.

The Israeli army increased its presence in the West Bank on Saturday.

Israeli security forces arrested several people in the town of Burqin and the Balata refugee camp.

According to the army, weapons were also confiscated.

According to the Israeli army, two terrorists opened fire on a security guard in the Israeli settlement of Ariel in the West Bank on Friday evening.

The perpetrators then fled in a car.

According to the rescue workers, the security guard, who is said to have been between 20 and 30 years old, succumbed to his injuries.

The Al-Aqsa Brigades, one of the largest militant Palestinian organizations in the West Bank, claimed responsibility for the attack on the guard.

The spokesman for the radical Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Hasem Kassem, described the attack as a "heroic operation at the end of the holy month of Ramadan".

It is part of "our people's response to the attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque."

New wave of violence

There have recently been several clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces at the mosque on Jerusalem's Temple Mount.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, a Palestinian was shot dead during an operation by Israeli soldiers in the village of Assun near Ariel.

The young man was hit in the chest.

It was initially unclear whether this incident was related to the search for the two perpetrators of Ariel.

Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have recently increased significantly.

On Friday, 42 people were injured in renewed clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and the Israeli police in East Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Israeli police said "rioters" threw stones and firecrackers in the square in front of Al-Aqsa Mosque, including at the Western Wall.

The Israeli security forces then advanced to the area around the mosque and used tear gas and rubber bullets against the mostly young men, eyewitnesses and reporters from the AFP news agency reported.

Fear of further escalation

In the past two weeks, nearly 300 Palestinians have been injured in riots on the mosque grounds.

Since the end of March, 15 people have also been killed in several anti-Israel attacks.

During operations by the Israeli security forces in the occupied West Bank, among other places, 27 Palestinians and three Arab Israelis were killed, including several suspected assassins.

It is feared that the tensions could further escalate the Middle East conflict.

A year ago, unrest in Jerusalem had sparked an 11-day armed conflict between Gaza's Hamas and the Israeli army, during which more than 250 people were killed.

Israel conquered the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War.

Around 600,000 Israelis live there today in more than 200 settlements.

In 2016, the UN Security Council called these settlements a violation of international law and called on Israel to stop all settlement activity.

The Palestinians want to set up their own states in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.
