Director of the Department of Non-Proliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry Vladimir Yermakov warned that the plans of the Okos alliance in the missile field complicate the situation in the field of international and regional security.
In an interview with the Russian Tass Agency, Yermakov said: "The countries that entered the Okos partnership, namely Australia, the United States and Britain, have previously announced their plans for cooperation in the field of missiles, the implementation of which will complicate the situation in the field of international and regional security."
Yermakov noted that Okos's plans in the field of hypersonic weapons also raise questions about the mission and scope of the deployment of missile systems, warning that the appearance of US short and medium-range missiles in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region would escalate the situation and encourage an arms race.
On August 2, 2019, the United States announced its official withdrawal from the Treaty on Short and Intermediate-Range Missiles, signed since 1987.
