Although Harvard is known as the stronghold of the liberal left in the United States, on Friday the prestigious student newspaper decided to issue a scathing anti-Israel statement that it has so far avoided despite its harsh criticism of Israel.
In an editorial, the editors of Harvard Crimson announced that they support the BDS movement against Israel, that is, in favor of sanctions and boycotts of it because of its treatment of the Palestinians.
However, this is not enough, the newspaper's editors have stated that they support Palestinian activists on campus who hold an "Israeli Apartheid Week" in which Israel's alleged injustices are presented every year.
"We, at last, proudly announce that we support the liberation of the Palestinians and the BDS movement, and we call on everyone to do the same," the editorial said.
In doing so, the newspaper made a significant U-turn regarding the boycott movement, which it consistently refused to support despite its criticism of Israel over the years, during which it defended Israel and denied the claim that Israel was carrying out an afterthought.
"In the past we were skeptical about the movement, even if not towards its general goals), because we did not think it understood the subtleties of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but we currently regret our [old] position, and reject it."
According to the editors, what changed their attitude was "the gravity of the hour - the violations of international law and human rights, and in light of the Palestinian cry for freedom."
