After the compulsory maypole break, there was a boisterous celebration throughout the Freising district.

For example in Zolling, where there is now a 30 meter giant.

Zolling

– For two years, the corona pandemic paralyzed the traditional maypole erection on May 1st.

Two years break.

Now the beginning of the merry month was celebrated in the district as before: with brass band music, plenty of food and drink.

Despite the drizzle, there was a relaxed atmosphere in Zolling.

There is nothing more important than being together in the village.

And the ratcheting, said a woman from Zollingen, "was nicer than ever before".

As in many towns in the district, it was a joint venture: Thanks to the many helpers from the clubs, above all the boys and girls club in Zollinger and the volunteer fire brigade, who took on the organisation, the residents of Zollinger were able to do it really well let go

Two years of forced break are over: The Zollinger boys recently suffered from acute maypole withdrawal.

On Sunday it was finally time again: the well-kept 30-meter tree was hoisted into the air - and then a clean party was held.

It arrived in white and blue: the traditional bar was towed from the building yard in Oberzolling over the narrow canal bridge towards the village early in the morning.

The many hours of work that were necessary to remove the bark from the 30-meter-long gem, delimb it and paint it were no longer visible to the boys.

The joy of finally lifting a tree vertically again – with a crane, as is tradition in Zolling – was huge.

Maypole thieves didn't stand a chance

The fact that they had successfully protected their own "Stangerl" from maypole thieves for a week made everyone proud, reported Zollinger BV chairman Johannes Schlichenmaier.

"The tree gardeners didn't stand a chance with us." The signs that traditionally adorn the tree were also polished to a high gloss beforehand.

Many helping hands were there when they were screwed on.

The Zollinger magnificent specimen was donated this year by Johann Holzer from Fischer-Hof in Zolling.

The Florian disciples also enjoyed the fact that the beer benches could finally be taken out and set up again - active and passive alike.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

After the compulsory break of at least three years, during which there was no May Festival in Zolling, many delicacies were prepared and offered for the physical well-being of the guests: schnitzel, potato salad and currywurst.

Despite the uncertain weather forecast, the decision was made to hold the festival, said Commander Wolfgang Westermeier.

On the safe side: In Zolling, a crane is used to erect it, which is definitely the best choice given the length of the tree.

There's nothing like good advice

The guests, who came for lunch at 11 a.m., confirmed that this decision was the right one.

The togetherness in the village is important, chatting with neighbors and acquaintances, that's nicer than ever in times after the contact restrictions, said a woman from Zolling.

Nobody could do anything about the weather, she said, looking at the dark clouds.

"It's also such a nice party." It's also exciting for the children to be able to be there when a maypole is put up, emphasized a young dad.

"We are very happy that we can once again do something for the Zollinger", Christian Sellmair, chairman of the fire brigade association, summed it up.

Zollinger celebrated under the tent roof

Of course, there is a certain risk for the fire brigade association if the guests stay away due to the weather.

But that wasn't the case.

"It tasted good", that was confirmed to the organizers by the guests, who enjoyed themselves under the tent roof despite the drizzle.
