The Lake Chad Basin, which stretches its shores across these four states, is a vast expanse of water and swamps where jihadist groups Boko Haram and its rival Islamic State in West Africa (Iswap) have set up hideouts in the innumerable islets with which it is dotted.

To combat them, in 2015, the armies of the four countries, as well as that of Benin, reactivated a Multinational Mixed Force (MMF), created in 1994 but very little operational since.

The Chadian, Cameroonian, Nigerian and Nigerian troops of the MMF launched on March 21 a new coordinated and multidirectional offensive in the four countries, called "

Operation Integrity of the Lake

", whose objective is to "

completely destroy Boko Haram and other terrorist groups that scour the Lake Chad basin

,” a senior official of the FMM, whose headquarters is based in N'Djamena, told AFP on Sunday, on condition of anonymity.

And thanks to "

close air support

", Nigerien and Nigerian elements of the MMF "

carried out aggressive patrols (...) against the positions of the terrorists

" in a jihadist "

stronghold

" near Tumbun Rago, in the Nigerian state of Borno, near the borders of the other three countries, details a press release from the FMM.

Between Wednesday and Saturday, "

at least 20 terrorists were neutralized

" despite "

strong resistance

", the statement said.

"

Neutralized

" means "

killed

", the senior official of the FMM told AFP.

The operation took place in Cameroon and Nigeria.

The maritime part in Cameroon and the land part in Nigeria

”, specified the official of the FMM.

Cameroonian soldiers "

neutralized

" two "

Boko Haram logisticians

" a little further south, also in Nigerian territory, according to the press release.

The FMM did not deliver on Sunday the total results of its “

Operation Integrity of the Lake

” since its launch six weeks earlier.

But in a press release dated April 25, she assured that "

30 terrorists

" had been "

neutralized

" - without specifying when - by Nigerien elements in the Kaji Jiwa area, in the Nigerien part of the lake.

A soldier died, added the FMM.

The Boko Haram insurgency emerged in 2009 in Nigeria before spreading to neighboring countries.

Since then, more than 36,000 people (mainly in Nigeria) have been killed, and 3 million have had to flee their homes, according to the UN.
