At the traditional May rallies in France, there were clashes between demonstrators and the police in Paris.
Around 20 shops, including McDonald's branches and banks, were damaged and a car was broken into.
Black-clad and masked demonstrators are said to have tried to set up a barricade.
The police responded with tear gas and water cannons.
France's Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin condemned the riots on Twitter.
The acts of violence committed by rioters are unacceptable.
As Darmanin wrote, there were 29 arrests in Paris alone by the evening.
Demonstrations against Macron's pension reform
Labor Day demonstrations were held nationwide in France on Sunday, to which the trade unions had called.
Tens of thousands of people took part in the rallies.
They were directed against the announced pension reform of the re-elected President Emmanuel Macron.
He originally wanted to raise the retirement age from 62 to 65.
Most recently, he did not rule out a limit of 64.
Incidents also occurred at a demonstration in Nantes.
The police intervened in the face of actions by ultra-left activists, the prefecture said.
