"Alik was a first-rate professional, but above all he was a unique person, all hearted. And today that heart is silent. I share in the heavy mourning of the family. May his memory be blessed."

Deputy Chief of Staff Alik Elbaz - who was officially due to receive the new ranks tomorrow - was 48 at the time of his death, served in the fire brigade for 28 years as a firefighter and commander and in the past year served as a senior representative of the fire brigade in the Ministry of Internal Security.

He is survived by his wife and three children.

The Fire Brigade Commission stated: "Deputy Chief Elbaz grew up in the operational arm of the fire brigade and held a number of command positions in the Dan district, including deputy and acting commander of the Bnei Brak station and head of the investigations and emergency department.

"His friends and subordinates from the Bnei Brak station describe him as a soldier and as a well-respected, valued and professional commander who acted out of a sense of mission, love of the profession and a sense of the value of human life."

Fire and Rescue Commissioner Rabbi Tafser Eyal Caspi expressed his condolences to the family and noted: "Deputy Tafser Alik Elbaz, a valued, professional and pleasant officer, contributed his best years to maintaining Israel's internal security. "Time is a sad and painful event, we embrace and embrace his dear family."
