After a two-year Corona break, a prominent group of journalists and politicians from the US capital will meet again for the White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington - the traditional evening event at which the mood is relaxed.

Even with the president, who is almost always the guest of honor here.

Joe Biden, US President

"I'm thrilled to be here tonight with the only group of Americans who have even lower approval ratings than I do.

"Imagine if my predecessor had come to this dinner. THAT would really have been a real coup, wouldn't it? That was a bit mean now, wasn't it?"

Comedian and TV star Trevor Noah went straight for Ron de Santis, the Republican governor of Florida and potential rival of Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential nomination, who was also present:

OT Trevor Noah, Comedian

"If Trump was the original Terminator, then de Santis is the t-1000. You're smarter than him. You're smarter than him. You can even walk down ramps. Trump said he won the election. But everyone could look at the numbers and see he was wrong. That's where Ron de Santis is a step ahead. First they ban math textbooks, then nobody knows how to count votes anymore. Bam! Exactly my type!"

The White House Dinner gives speakers a chance to attack the other side in a humorous way - back to Joe Biden:

Joe Biden, US President

"Everyone who's here has had to show they're fully vaccinated and boosted. So if you're back home wondering how, just ask your favorite Fox News reporter. Because they're all here, vaccinated and boosted. All!

I'm not worried about the midterm elections.

We may get more partisan deadlock, but I'm confident we can pull that off in my remaining six years in office."

Six years, not just two – there is already speculation in the USA whether Biden will even run again in the 2024 election given his advanced age.

The closing words from Trevor Noah:

OT Trevor Noah, Comedian

"This really is the golden age of conspiracy theories. Whether it's the right who believes Trump can still win the 2020 election. Or the left who believes Biden can still win the 2024 election."
