(CNN Spanish) –

This Monday night the event that in the United States seeks to raise funds for the Institute of Clothing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, known as Met Gala, takes place.

It is a ceremony that the editorial director of the magazine Vogue Mexico and Latin America, Karla Martínez de Salas, describes as the "Superbowl" of fashion, or the night of the "Oscar" of fashion.

Zona Pop spoke with her about it during the Espacio Vogue event in Mexico City.

"It

's

the event

of the year, and this year it's back again in May, the first Monday in May. Last year, because of the pandemic, it was in September, and it was a smaller event. Now we're very excited about what that we are going to see this Monday", assures Martínez de Salas.

This year, the theme of the red carpet is "Gilded glamour," so attendees will embody the grandeur of New York from the three-decade period at the end of the 19th century, known as such.

"Yes, this year is called

The Gilded Age

, which is super interesting to me because if you think about this time when people spent and bought clothes, jewelry and watches, I think we're going to see a lot of jewelry, we're going to see lots of sequins and diamonds, and everything you think of when you think of the 'Gilded Age,'" says Karla.

The Central Theme of the Met Gala Exhibit: American Fashion, Part Two

The main goal of this event is not for celebrities to pay close to $30,000 per ticket and parade down the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in flashy dresses.

The aim is to raise funds for the Clothing Institute of said museum, with an exhibition that lasts a year.

"This year's theme is a continuation of what we saw in September, which is

American Fashion.

It's the lexicon of American fashion seen through the eyes of various designers. This year's, part two, is called of "In America: An Anthology of Fashion", details Martínez de Salas.

"I love it, because when you're talking about American designers, names like María Cornejo, Willy Chavarría, Jonathan Cohen, Donna Karan, Carolina Herrera and Calvin Klein are present in the exhibition, but I love seeing that there are now many Latin designers in the exhibition, which are American designers," he adds.

"In a prominent moment of the exhibition is a dress that was an American flag made by Willy Chavarría, a Chicano designer from Los Angeles of Mexican parents who has been the creative director of Calvin Klein for two years. I felt great because he is changing fashion in the United States. United and also changing what we say about beauty," he says.

Eiza González, Maluma and J Balvin with confirmed invitation to the Met Gala

It is said that Anna Wintour is the one who decides who is invited to this celebration.

Last year, the one who dazzled by her beauty in a red Versace dress, with Bulgari jewels and evoking María Félix with her

look

was Eiza González.

What other Latinos will be present this year?

"The ones I know for sure that are invited are Eiza, Maluma, J Balvin and his girlfriend Valentina Ferrer, who is Argentine, Bad Bunny and Rosalía. I hope to see someone like Ariana de Bose, the Puerto Rican who won the Oscar. I love to see that now there is more Latino representation in this event, when before there was little," says Martínez de Salas.

What is it like working with Anna Wintour?

There are many stories of what it is like to work with Anna Wintour.

There is an urban legend that "The Devil Wears Prada" ("The devil wears fashion", in Spanish) is based on her, but what is it really like to work with the most important fashion journalist?

"The truth is that she is a very focused woman, super professional. I can say that I have always admired her a lot, since I was an assistant, because she is a mother, a wife, she has children, she has grandchildren and what she has done with Vogue," says Martínez de Salas.

"The direction in which he has taken the Met to the end in fundraising. Everything he has done for the museum for the Costume Institute, for designers, especially American designers, well, it's super important," he adds.

"She is someone who makes quick decisions, she is a professional and I feel that she always remembers who works and how they work, and gives a lot of credit where it is deserved," he concludes.
