The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Monday claimed responsibility for an attack that claimed the life of an Israeli guard at a settlement in the occupied West Bank on Friday, two days after the rival Fatah movement claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Friday, two assailants shot and killed an Israeli guard on duty outside one of the entrances to the Israeli settlement of Ariel located in the northern West Bank, a Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of the Fatah party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, on Saturday.

“We claim responsibility for the heroic operation in the settlement of Ariel in which a Zionist (Israeli, editor's note) officer was killed.

It was carried out in response to violations committed by the occupation government”

in East Jerusalem, said a statement from this armed wing.

An allusion to the clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians which in recent weeks have injured nearly 300 Palestinians on and around the esplanade of the Mosques in East Jerusalem, a Palestinian sector of the Holy City occupied and annexed by Israel.

But on Monday, the armed wing of Hamas, the ruling movement in Gaza and one of Israel's pet peeves, claimed responsibility for the same attack.

"We take full responsibility for the heroic attack carried out by our fighters on Friday in what is called Ariel and in which a Zionist was killed

," the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement.

On Saturday, Israeli forces announced that they had arrested the two suspected perpetrators of the attack in the Palestinian village of Qarawat Bani Hassan, northwest of Ariel.

The assailants fled after the attack.

In their statement, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades claimed that the two arrested Palestinians were Hamas fighters.
