At the "May Ball" of the Kolping Family in Au, there was not only plenty of entertainment, but also a very special choice.

Au/Hallertau

– The audience at the May Ball of the Au Kolping Family was actually prepared for the election of the first May Queen.

But elections – politicians can sing songs about them – are unpredictable.

There was a May King: Simon Reiter (19) from Au.

After the traditional carnival ball was out of the question this year because of Corona, the Kolping Family decided to dance into May and the newly created honorary title of May Queen was planned as one of the highlights.

The four entries were divided into three elegant young women and one smart gentleman: Alexandra Scherbel (22, Au), Anna Haug (15, Au), Simon Reiter (19, Au) and Claudia Fuchs (19, Dellnhausen).

The election consisted of a brief introduction by the quartet and then each guest was allowed to write a name on the back of their ticket.

Simon Reiter already had the funniest saying in his three sentences: "Most people here know me and the others just get to know me."

Around 350 guests celebrated a glittering ball in the Auer Hopfenlandhalle on Saturday.

Maybe that was the decisive joke, because Reiter got 79 votes from the 350 or so guests.

That meant a minimal lead of four votes, with everything else remaining secret.

The May King received a gift package, a sash and the hop crown that is obligatory in Au.

The three women were all second.

Simon Reiter came up with the title somewhat by accident, because he was persuaded to take part by Claudia Fuchs.

The two are founders of the Landjugend Dellnhausen and Fuchs didn't want to be alone on the stage.

Another highlight was the performance of the Dancing Angels from the neighboring town of Nandlstadt.

It was the first performance for the dance group after the corona restrictions.

And it was most spectacular.

The Dancing Angels from Nandlstadt celebrated their comeback after the corona restrictions - skilfully as ever.

In a small satirical interlude, the Kolping family also made fun of Au's permanent order and advertised the Postillon d'Au, in which several local political issues were poked fun at.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

After a great dance into May, the Kolping Family now has to lay its hands on the cards for next year as to how the evening should continue.

In the coming year, the club should continue the old tradition again in carnival.

However, the chairman, Alfred Baur, does not yet know whether the association and its limited circle of volunteers have the strength and time to organize two major events within three months.

It is therefore currently also conceivable that Simon Reiter will go down in community history as the only May King of all time and that there will never be a May Queen.
