The General Security Service has revealed an Iranian network operation in recent months.

The goal of the Iranians was to operate a fictitious profile with the identity of a Jew in order to locate and recruit Israeli citizens in order to gather information and even harm targets in Israel.

This is how the method works

The Iranians opened a fictitious Facebook page under the name Sarah Poppy, the same young woman who introduced herself as a Jewish girl with connections and business in Israel.

In a very short time, the profile gained thousands of members, with most of its members being from Israel.

After contacting Facebook, the connection was transferred to the WhatsApp app.

According to the GSS statement: "Applying through social networks is a well-known method used by the terrorist organizations and Iranian intelligence, to recruit and operate Israelis.

In recent months, there has also been a growing preoccupation of these factors in contacting Israelis through the Internet, sometimes foolishly using false coverage and representation, in favor of recruiting them to gather intelligence and terrorist activity.

The network activity described above has been monitored by the General Security Service since its inception. "

Subsequently, the Iranian operator used the fictitious profile "Sarah Poppy" and asked his operatives in Israel to locate information on Israelis who are of interest to Iranian intelligence.

Meanwhile, the Iranian operator asked the Israeli operator to gather information about Israeli personalities and examined his willingness to harm them, while exerting pressure and securing sums of money in the amount of thousands of dollars, as payment for the operation.

Sometimes an attempt is even made to use emotional and romantic manipulations.

But the operators did not know that on the other side the GSS was acting against him.

In exchange for the missions, funds were transferred from the Iranian operator to the alleged operator, using Bitcoin-type cryptocurrencies.

The Iranian operator behind the Facebook profile used a business coverage story to assign various tasks, such as a request for revenge on those who owe him money, a desire to harm personal opponents and even a desire to harm LGBT people in general. Allegedly to carry out inciting outdoor advertising against Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the aim of undermining Israel-Russia relations.

The Iranian operator also tried to gather intelligence and harm the representatives of business companies and diplomats of Arab countries operating in Israel.

The GSS stated that "this activity of the General Security Service revealed Iranian methods of operation alongside a desire to harm Israeli personalities and Israel's foreign relations with various countries.

"The General Security Service, in accordance with its purpose under the law, continues to act in the face of other similar moves by Iranians and terrorist organizations in cyberspace.
