United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on the international community to secure more resources to combat terrorist attacks in the African Sahel region, noting the continued increase in the number of terrorist attacks in this region.
Russia Today website quoted Guterres as saying after his meeting with Niger President Mohamed Bazoum in Niamey that the international community must realize that terrorism is not just a regional or African issue, but an issue that threatens the entire world, once again calling for more resources to address the problem.
Guterres added: Peace, stability and prosperity in Niger and across the Sahel region remains an absolute priority for the United Nations, reiterating his commitment to finding a solution to the problem of terrorism, saying: It is dynamic and evolving and we need to adapt our response.
According to the United Nations, the number of people suffering from acute food insecurity has doubled since 2020 and that 15 percent of Niger's population of 25 million will need humanitarian assistance in 2022.
