After her day's work, a mother parked her car in front of the Séméac school, near Tarbes, to pick up her son, who had spent the day at the summer camp, leaving her daughter inside, installed in her car seat in the back seat, according to a source familiar with the investigation.
With the keys left in the ignition, a thief stole the vehicle and fled.
On leaving school with her son, the mother noticed that the car and her daughter had disappeared and alerted the police.
The vehicle was found shortly after in front of the Lannemezan gendarmerie, still in the Hautes-Pyrénées, about 40 km from Séméac.
According to the police, the thief probably realized the presence of the girl in the back of the car and decided to abandon the vehicle in front of the gendarmerie.
