Finally cooling down!

In the extreme heat, only a cool bath helps.

An average of 37.8 degrees in April - this is unusual even for India.

The country has been struggling with an extreme heat wave since March.

The sidewalks are melting, there are several fires, warnings about damage to health.

Srishti, New Delhi resident:

'I'm visiting friends at the moment.

Actually they wanted to come for 4-5 days.

But the heat is basically unbearable.

It's very, very... I mean, we can't take it.

We always have the air conditioning on and can't leave the house."

That's how it is for many Indians.

The air conditioners run continuously.

As a result, demand for electricity rose to a record high in April.

The result: several power outages in large parts of the country.

The worst power crisis in six years ensued.

Amritpal, Amritsar resident:

»It is extremely hot and the power cuts bother us a lot.

There is no electricity all day.

We came here to get relief from the heat.

»

On Sunday there was a little breather: the temperatures started to drop.

Some scientists link the early start of summer to climate change.

However, from the point of view of the World Weather Organization, it cannot yet be conclusively proven whether this is actually the case.
