A member of the Russian Federation Council, Senator Alexei Pushkov, described Germany's refusal to supply gas from Russia during 2022 and 2023 as "crazy."
Today, the RIA Novosti news agency quoted Pushkov as saying that the approach announced by Berlin to refuse gas from Russia in 2024 appears today as an "unrealistic utopian" idea, adding, "With regard to the year 2022-2023, such a refusal would be madness from Germany."
The German authorities announced last February their intention to reduce dependence on Russian energy supplies in the foreseeable future and expected to stop importing coal and oil from Russia by the end of this year, noting the possibility of ending dependence on Russian gas by mid-2024.
Experts said earlier that high energy prices and a possible ban on importing fuel from Russia threaten Germany with recession, while the German magazine (Der Spiegel) said that the European Union would have to stop the wheel of the industry if Russian gas was abandoned.
