Vaccine giant Moderna opens German headquarters in Munich – Lauterbach is thrilled

The vaccine giant Moderna is opening its first location in Germany in Munich.

Karl Lauterbach didn't want to miss the opening either.

Munich – The US biotechnology company Moderna has had its first company headquarters on German soil since the end of April.

The headquarters of the company's German subsidiary is in Munich, more precisely on the 8th floor of the Atlas high-rise building in the Werksviertel.

By the end of the year, 30 employees will be working at the site on new research collaborations and networks in the German healthcare system.

The company Moderna, which was founded in September 2010, became well known, especially during the corona pandemic.

It was among the first biotechnology companies to develop an mRNA vaccine against the corona virus.

Therefore, Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach also appeared at the opening of the headquarters of the company officially called Moderna Germany GmbH - at least virtually.

According to sueddeutsche.de, Lauterbach was enthusiastic about the new headquarters via video call.

According to Lauterbach, the success story of mRNA technology has not yet come to an end.

He also expressed his hope that the administrative headquarters in Munich would develop into a production site.

Moderna in Munich: prominent visitors – with many compliments

In addition to Lauterbach, the Bavarian Minister for Europe Melanie Huml, Munich's second mayor Katrin Habenschaden and Gerald Wiegand, Managing Director of Moderna in Germany, also appeared.

Huml and Haben Schaden were very pleased that Moderna Germany had chosen Munich as the location for their first German company headquarters and pledged their support.

According to SZ, Wiegand explains that it was an exciting race, but in the end the attractive location tipped the scales.

Now the headquarters of Moderna Germany is in Munich, the city where Wiegand himself grew up and went to school.

Haben Schaden rejoices: Moderna is a booster for Munich as a business location and "therefore fits in perfectly with our city".

Munich: Moderna with big goals – and “mRNA Access”

At the press conference, Wiegand made big announcements: "mRNA has the potential to change the future of medicine".

It is therefore particularly important to explain the underlying mRNA technology in a comprehensible manner and to bring it closer to the population.

According to Moderna, 31 vaccines are currently in development, including vaccines against influenza and the Zika virus.

At the same time, Moderna made an announcement in its press release on the opening of the Munich location: "The program 'mRNA Access' will be offered to scientists all over the world".

This allows access to Moderna's mRNA platform.

This helps with the joint research and development of new vaccines.
