Colombia will celebrate Mother's Day this year on Sunday, May 8, thus joining other countries such as Mexico, the United States or Spain that also commemorate the work of mothers in the month of May.

In Colombia, mothers are celebrated on the second Sunday of each May, that is, on the 8th for this 2022. A date that, therefore, varies from year to year.

This 2022, Colombians will be able to resume the Mother's Day celebrations on the established date, after last year the authorities postponed the celebrations until May 30 due to the third wave of infections by covid-19.

But what is the origin of this celebration?

In contemporary times, the origin of Mother's Day dates back to May 1907 when Anna Jarvis wanted to pay tribute to her mother, Anne Reeves Jarvis, in a West Virginia Methodist church after her death.

Thanks to Jarvis, the first Mother's Day was commemorated in the United States and in 1914 then President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill to recognize Mother's Day as a national holiday.

The official recognition of Mother's Day in Colombia came about eleven years later when then President Pedro Nel Ospina decreed the second Sunday of May the national holiday of the Mother throughout the territory, under Law 28 of 1925.

However, despite the fact that the date for the Mother's Day celebrations was established on that date under this law, in the Norte de Santander department the celebrations take place on the last Sunday of May, according to reports from Semana and other Colombian media.

Although this 2022 will not be like this because the National Federation of Merchants (Fenalco) of the Norte de Santander section announced that it will change the date before the first round of the presidential elections.

"Due to the presidential elections, a consultation was carried out with the affiliates, so said celebration was determined for Sunday, May 22," Fenalco said in a statement.
