Biden promises to work to convert the right to abortion into law and asks for the vote in November to be able to shield Roe v. wade in congress

"I believe that the right of women to choose is fundamental," says the president after the leak of a Supreme Court draft, and defends the 1973 ruling that protects this option.

The president, Joe Biden, published a statement on Tuesday about the leak of a draft decision of the Supreme Court that suggests that the conservative majority of justices could decide to annul the constitutional recognition of the right to abortion.

"We don't know if the draft is authentic, or if it reflects the final decision of the court. With that critical caution, I want to clarify three points about the cases that the Supreme Court hears," Biden said.

  • "First of all, my Administration argued strongly in court in defense of Roe v. Wade. We said it rests on a long line of precedent that recognizes 'the Fourteenth Amendment concept of personal liberty [...] against the government interference in intensely personal decisions.' I believe

a woman's right to choose is fundamental,

Roe v. Wade has been the norm in the country for nearly 50 years, and the basic fairness and stability of our law requires that we not be annulled".

  • "Second, shortly after the enactment of Texas SB 8 and others restricting women's reproductive rights, I directed my Gender Policy Council and the Office of the White House General Counsel to prepare options for a "

The Administration's response to the continued assault on abortion and reproductive rights, under a variety of possible outcomes in pending court cases.

We will be prepared when any ruling is made

    . "

  • “Third, if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v.

Wade, it will be up to elected officials at all levels of our nation's government to protect women's right to choose.

    And

it will be up to voters to elect pro-choice policymakers in November.

At the federal level, we will need more senators in favor, and a majority in the House of Representatives, to convert Roe v.

Wade into law, something I'm going to work on and sign into legislation."

The draft obtained by the Politico news portal suggests that the majority of the justices are in favor of

annulling the Roe v.

Wade,

who legalized abortion in 1973. If confirmed, it would be the first time in history that the deliberations of the Supreme Court are revealed before its final decision.

Also, in a joint statement, the two top Democratic leaders in Congress -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer -- noted: "If the information is accurate, The Supreme Court is about to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in 50 years, not just on women, but on all Americans."

The leak of the draft comes after a legislative push to restrict abortion rights in several Republican-led states (Oklahoma is the most recent), even before the highest court issues its decision on the matter.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, also a Democrat, said people who need an abortion can go to the state.

“For anyone who needs access to health care, our state will welcome them with open arms.

Abortion will always be safe and accessible in New York," Hochul said on Twitter.

In Mississippi, on the other hand, local officials praised the possible ruling of the Supreme Court, although the attorney general of this state, Lynn Fitch, called for caution: “We will let the Supreme Court speak for itself and wait for its official opinion.”
