After its partner Bosch, the Volkswagen Group is bringing another industry heavyweight on board for the development of autonomous and highly automated driving.
The US chip manufacturer Qualcomm will take over the equipment of various new models from Europe's largest car group "from the middle of the decade", as the VW software division Cariad announced on Tuesday.
Wolfsburg/San Diego - Among other things, it is about a "system on chip" that Qualcomm designed for use in technologies for complex assistance functions through to self-driving cars.
The Wolfsburg-based company announced in January that it would get support from Bosch for software for autonomous driving applications - Bosch, in turn, also wants to strengthen itself in this area with acquisitions.
In terms of hardware, Volkswagen is also pursuing plans to build its own chip design, with Tesla being one of the role models.

VW boss Herbert Diess explained that all Group vehicles that will later receive uniform software from Cariad would be equipped with Qualcomm technology.
At the same time, they will continue to work together with Intel and Mobileye - even more intensively than before.
