The European Championships 2022 will be held in Munich from August 11th to 21st.

It is set to be the largest sporting event in the Bavarian capital since the 1972 Olympic Games.

Munich - It is supposed to be

biggest sporting event in Munich since the Olympic Games in 1972 - the European Championships 2022. From August 11th to 21st the European Championships of various sports will be held in the Bavarian capital, above all on the grounds of the Olympic Park.

But other locations in Munich, as well as the cities of Fürstenfeldbruck and Landsberg am Lech, as well as the municipality of Murnau am Staffelsee, will then become the focus of global public attention.

The European Championships of

nine different sports

are held simultaneously in and around Munich.

Sports include

beach volleyball, canoe racing, rock climbing, athletics, cycling, rowing, table tennis, triathlon and gymnastics.

Below is a brief overview of each sport, its venues and the number of gold medals that can be won.

A total of 177 gold medals are up for grabs.

European Championships 2022: sport of beach volleyball

The European Beach Volleyball Championships are held on Munich's Königsplatz.

For this purpose, six beach volleyball courts will be built there at short notice.

128 athletes from all over the world are fighting for two gold medals on the sandy ground.

European Championships 2022: Canoe Racing

The Munich Olympic Regatta Facility is celebrating a premiere in 2022: for the first time, the European Championships in both canoe racing and rowing will be hosted here.

Over 675 athletes compete to win 41 gold medals in canoe racing.

The regatta facility was built for the 1972 Olympic Games and still impresses with its fair competition conditions.

It has been a listed building since 2018.

There are medal decisions in the disciplines bouldering, lead and speed and for the first time also in the combination bouldering and lead on the program.

The climbing walls are set up on the Königsplatz and are partially covered.

So the bouldering wall is provided with a roof.

The lead wall and the speed wall, on the other hand, only to a limited extent.

If the weather is bad and the holds get wet and slippery, the events will have to be postponed, according to the organizers.

European Championships 2022: sport athletics

In 2002, the European Athletics Championships took place in the Munich Olympic Stadium.

This year, twenty years later, that will be the case again.

1500 athletes fight for 50 medals in August.

The marathon and walking competitions, on the other hand, take place in the heart of Munich.

The marathon route takes runners along famous Munich landmarks.

The marathon begins at Odeonsplatz and, after a one-time additional loop to the Siegestor, leads back towards Marienplatz, via the Viktualienmarkt to Gärtnerplatz, to the Isar and the Isartor.

From there, the runners continue on the Ring to Prinzregentenstraße.

After circumnavigating the Angel of Peace, the route follows Widenmeyerstraße along the Isar, through the English Garden to Leopoldstraße.

The goal is again the Odeonsplatz.

European Championships 2022 in Munich: cycling

In cycling there will be 30 medal decisions for the 770 athletes — 22 of them will be at the Münchzen Exhibition Centre.

There the best train drivers will compete against each other.

In the Olympic Park there will be competitions in the Mountainbike Cross-Country and BMX Freestyle Park.

The road races, on the other hand, do not start in Munich, but in Landsberg am Lech (for the women's elite and the municipality of Murnau am Staffelsee (for the men's elite) and then lead to the Bavarian capital. The time trial takes place around Fürstenfeldbruck.

Particularly interesting for visitors: In cycling there is free entry for the disciplines of road cycling, mountain biking cross-country and BMX freestyle.

European Championships 2022: Rowing

At the Olympic regatta facility in Oberschleißheim not only the canoeists will fight for gold medals, but also the rowers beforehand.

660 athletes are expected, 24 gold medals are at stake.

The Olympic Regatta Facility was the venue for the Rowing World Championships in 1981 and 2007 and 13 Rowing World Cup regattas were held there between 1998 and 2012.

European Championships 2022 in Munich: Table tennis

The European Table Tennis Championships are held in the Audi Dome (formerly Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle).

260 athletes are expected there to compete against each other in the world's fastest racket sport.

At the European Championships in 2021, the German table tennis players secured four out of five gold medals.

August will show whether they can defend the title.

The Rudi-Sedlmayer Halle was built in 1972 for the Olympic basketball tournament and has been the home of FC Bayern Basketball for more than ten years.

European Championships 2022: Triathlon

The triathlon begins with swimming in the Olympic lake.

The following cycling and running routes lead the triathletes through and around the Olympic Park.

228 competitors take part, three gold medals are up for grabs.

European Championships 2022: Gymnastics

As part of the European Championships Munich 2022, the European Championships in Artistic Gymnastics will take place.

These will be held in the Olympic Hall — the second largest sports facility in the Olympic Park.

The hall holds up to 15,500 spectators.

300 athletes will show their skills there, they compete for 14 gold medals.

European Championships 2022: Class of 22

The best sports stars will compete in August and fight for the medals of the European Championships.

The documentary "Class of 22" accompanies 14 German athletes from training to participation in the European Championships: Alma Bestvater (climbing), Christina Hering (athletics), the siblings Simon and Franca Henseleit (triathlon), Max Lemke (canoe racing), Lara Lessmann (cycling), Bo Kanda Lita Baehre (athletics), Felix Remuta (gymnastics), Gudrun Storck (cycling), Clemens Wickler (beach volleyball), Sabine Winter (table tennis), Oliver Zeidler (rowing) and Felicia Laberer (canoe racing) .

European Championships 2022: This is the mascot

The mascot for the European Championships 2022 is the sporty squirrel "Gfreidi", wearing a traditional hat and leather trousers.

The website of the European Championships says about the squirrel: "Gfreidi is lively, active, curious and clever.

European Championships 2022: In addition to the competitions, there is also a big festival

In addition to the sporting competitions, a large festival is also planned in Munich's Olympic Park.

According to the organizer, a “mix of music, culture, art, food” will accompany the European Championships under the motto “The Roofs — Festival of Munich 2022”.

In terms of cuisine, delicacies from all over the world are on offer.

As a homage to 50 years of the Olympic Park, the program is intended to be "symbolic of the diversity of this unique location, its history, present and future".

The organizers rely more on "village character than gigantism", the focus is on the special, not on the masses.

The tickets are very different in price, depending on the discipline and the type of duel, tickets cost between 20 and 130 euros.
