A turning point in the war in Ukraine?
Intelligence sources in Britain and the United States estimated over the past day that the Russian offensive in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine was close to halting, and that the Russian military had significantly reduced its offensive initiative due to heavy casualties suffered in the fighting.
The Washington Post quoted senior U.S. intelligence officials as saying that the Russian military had refrained from advancing for fear of loss and in many cases withdrew from cells it had managed to occupy.
In addition, it was reported that last week the Russian army did not increase its force in Ukraine and it stands at 93 combat teams, some of which were significantly eroded in combat.
This means that the Russian army will find it difficult to renew its offensive effort with renewed forces.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian army reported this morning that it had managed to destroy 17 cannons, two tanks and 18 armored vehicles in the past day.
The composition of the attacks indicates a transition to artillery exchanges and not to armored or khir fights.
Also, the Pentagon yesterday sent reporters an assessment of the Russian operation in the Donbass region and said that so far it can be defined as "very scattered, very careful and one that shows unequal efforts in various battlefields".
The Pentagon estimated that the Russian army suffered from low morale among the soldiers and that the chain of command performed "poorly" during the fighting.
In recent days, the Russians have made little progress throughout the Donbas region, mainly south of the town of Izum and east of the town of Sverdonetsk.
The effort in Donbas obliged the Russian army not to reinforce its forces in northern Ukraine, around the city of Kharkiv, and the Ukrainians managed to occupy large areas back from the Russians north and east of the city.
