Garches: names of illustrious women to rename three streets paying homage to two notorious anti-Semites

2022-05-03T17:07:06.793Z

The city of Garches is launching a citizen consultation to choose the odonyms that will replace those of the Marquis de Morès and Charles Devos

Announced in 2020, the citizen consultation to change the names of the streets and alleys of Marquis-de-Morès and Place Charles-Devos, is now open to the inhabitants of Garches.

During a city council in February 2020, Mayor Jeanne BClearance (LR) put the openly anti-Semitic past of the two men back on the table, before proposing the organization of a consultation

Mayor of Garches from 1925 to 1931, Charles Devos, who gave his name to a square in the city center, is known for having directed the anti-Semitic bookstore in Paris and the finances of the National Anti-Jewish Committee.

The Marquis de Morès created the Anti-Semitic League of France.

If the inhabitants were not consulted to know if they approved of renaming the streets, they now have until May 30 to choose the surnames of women who will replace those of the two men.

“The name change was a campaign commitment, says the municipality.

Many Garchois reminded the municipality of this, which confirmed to us that it was indeed an expectation of the inhabitants.

“The change of address is going to be hell”

They are therefore invited to vote, on the city's website, for one to three surnames, from a list of eight women from the fields of culture, history and science: Marie Laurencin, Camille Claudel, George Sand, Colette , Simone Veil, Blanche de Castille, Lucie Aubrac and Marie Curie.

The three personalities with the most votes will become the first women to give their name to a street in the town.

“Me, I chose the scientist Marie Curie,” says a resident of Boulevard Général-de-Gaulle.

On this April morning in the Place Saint-Louis, not everyone is aware of the affair.

"If it's for this reason, I approve," announces Lucie when she hears the news.

I'm an Israelite so I can't be against it.

From the first week of consultation, 250 people had already voted.

"It's a good thing to put women's names, abounds a new resident of the town.

On the other hand, I pity the inhabitants of these streets.

“I have an SCI domiciled here, for the change of address it will be hell,” laments a resident of the rue du Marquis-de-Morès.

To facilitate the steps of the inhabitants concerned, the town hall takes care of informing several administrations.

But let them change their address on the public service site, in particular to inform the tax and car registration service.

The streets should be renamed before the summer.

The consultation is open until May 30.
