More than two years after the outbreak of the epidemic, disinfection products have become daily necessities.

A collaborative study by Hong Kong Baptist University found that many disinfectant products and toothpastes contain the antibacterial agent triclosan (TCS), which enters the human body through the skin surface and accumulates in the intestinal tract, increasing the chance of colitis.

Cai Zongwei, Chair Professor of HKBU's Department of Chemistry and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis, pointed out that research has found that many products used to clearly label "Triclosan (TCS)" on the packaging, but in recent years, manufacturers have gradually added Mark removed.

He urged the government to supervise and formulate guidelines to improve the transparency of product ingredients so that the public has the right to know. He also hoped that consumers would raise awareness and choose carefully.

TCS is often used in products such as mouthwash and toothpaste to prevent periodontitis.

TCS is an antibacterial agent commonly used in products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, disinfectant, cosmetics and toys.

It is a major environmental pollutant. It is ingested by human skin, mouth or breathing. Once TCS enters the human body, it will be rapidly metabolized into "TCS-glucuronide" (TCS-G) through intestinal metabolites.

However, TCS exposed to the environment will be toxic and easily accumulate in the intestinal tract, inducing the chance of colitis.

Colitis-causing substances found in large intestine four weeks after mice were fed TCS-containing diet

Cai Zongwei, Chair Professor of the Department of Chemistry at HKBU and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis, and his team conducted experiments with mice. When fed a diet containing TCS, they found the cause of colitis in the large intestine (caecum and colon) after four weeks. TCS.

A group of testers found the substance in their stool and urine samples after using personal care products containing TCS for four months.

Product packaging has not listed "TCS" in recent years

Cai Zongwei explained that when gut microbes metabolize TCS, they will be toxic, thus causing colitis.

Cai further said that in the past, some sterilization product packaging was clearly marked to contain "Triclosan (TCS)", but recently it was found that the relevant ingredients were no longer recorded on the packaging.

Cai Zongwei, Chair Professor of the Department of Chemistry of HKBU and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis, found that the current disinfection products do not indicate whether they contain TCS antibacterial ingredients, making it difficult for the public to choose products.

Scholars advocate stricter regulation of TCS applications

Cai Zongwei pointed out that the Hong Kong government and the business community have not yet had clear supervision and regulations on TCS.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the sale of over-the-counter disinfectant products containing TCS in 2016, but TCS is still approved for use in a wide range of products.

He hopes that the government can discuss with the business community to improve the transparency of product formulations, so that the public has the right to know and choose the content of TCS.
