Hundreds at demo after death of man at police checkpoint

After the death of a man during a police check in Mannheim, several hundred people demonstrated against police violence on Tuesday evening - in Mannheim and Heidelberg.
According to a police spokesman, around 150 people gathered on the Mannheim market square and the rally was initially peaceful.
Mannheim – Shortly after the start of the rally against police violence in Heidelberg at Bismarckplatz, a police spokeswoman spoke to around 220 participants.
A protest march through the city is also planned for the evening.
After a police check in Mannheim on Monday, a 47-year-old collapsed and later died in a hospital.
He had resisted the control and had been overpowered by the officers.
A doctor from the Central Institute for Mental Health had previously informed the police because a patient might need help.
Two officers and the doctor then went in search of the man.

The cause of death has so far remained unclear.
The autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
The first results should be available by the end of the week.
The public prosecutor's office is investigating the two officers involved for bodily harm resulting in death in office.
